Our favorite mermaid snack is back. Green Gems is greener than ever. She's loaded with locally-foraged mineral-rich kombu to support your digestive and immune systems, packed with flavorful green Hatch chiles, and stuffed with as many garlic scapes as we could fit in our car.
What are garlic scapes?
Garlic scapes are the long flowering ends sprouting from the hard neck varieties of garlic plants, which farmers will prune in order to send the plant’s energy back to the underground bulb. Once considered a weed and simply thrown away, scapes are now a magical addition to our already overflowing Sonoma County cornucopia, only available for a fleeting moment in late spring or early summer. For this year’s recipe, we were blessed with sweet and spicy Chesnok Red scapes from Bernier Farms, grown in the Dry Creek region just outside of the town of Healdsburg. The Berniers have been the authority on all things garlic since 1976, and we’re thrilled to be showcasing their prized scapes as a crown jewel in our Green Gems.

Ingredients: olive oil, garlic scapes, peanuts, sesame seeds, shallots, green chile flakes, garlic powder, pumpkin seeds, dried kombu, apple cider vinegar powder, brown sugar, Sichuan peppercorns, sea salt, ginger, spinach powder, cumin, white pepper, green cardamom, fennel seeds.
Heat level: Mild. A small step up in heat from previous years, when we've used a standard New Mexico green chile. The Hatch chiles used in this year's batch come from the Hatch Valley in New Mexico and are more roasty-toasty and complex. You'll love it.
This product contains peanuts and sesame. Like all of our products, it is shelf stable and there is no need to refrigerate after opening. It is olive oil-based so may firm up when cold.

This is my fave so I’m glad that it’s back! It arrived as expected. This crisp is just great on everything - pork, eggs, ramen, etc.
I am so glad I was keeping my eyes open for the reappearance of Green Gems this summer. I know how much work this chili crisp is to make, with foraging of the seaweed necessary. I ordered two bottles and opened one the day it arrived, adding it to my Chinese noodles and kung pao chicken as a topping/condiment. Then having it the next day with rice and stir-fried vegetables. And so forth! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Green gems converted even the "don't really like chili crisp" and "no thanks, I never add sauce" people at our table. It's absolutely unique and definitely delicious!
This is the perfect gift for the season. I will give out liberally. Many thanks for the delicious gifts.
Sitting on our back deck during happy hour we ate almost the whole thing directly from the jar.
